Astro Radio still #1 in Sabah and Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU: Astro Radio remains the leading radio in Sabah and Sarawak. According to the 2014 Nielsen Radio Listenership Survey 541,000 listeners in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching tuned in to its stations weekly.

“Astro Radio continues to be the choice for listeners in Kota Kinabalu with a reach of 82 per cent,” said its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jake Abdullah, during a media briefing here on Thrusday.

The Nielsen Radio Survey reported that ERA fm, hitz fm and MY FM, three of Astro’s radio stations, remained the number one stations for listeners in Malay, English and Chinese languages.

A total of 122,300 listeners in Kota Kinabalu listen to ERA fm weekly. Hitz fm has 954,000 weekly listeners. MyFM has 27,300 listeners per week with 8,900 of them in the ‘frequent’ category.

ERA fm in Kuching recorded 127,500 weekly listeners, 97,000 listeners for Hitz fm and 109,900 for MyFM. Jake said the continued popularity of the stations proved that their focus on local content and local talents were on the right track.

The amalgamation of Sabah and Sarawak listener figures shows that of the 249,800 ERA fm listeners weekly, 53 per cent of those who tuned in were below 30 years, hitz fm has 67% under 30 while MyFM has 52 per cent below 40.

“We have invested in Sabah and Sarawak, and our efforts in localisation such as local artistes and radio hosts are paying off with a growing listenership and market share,” said Dr Jake, while thanking the public for their support. He said that the radio trends continue to evolve and Astro aims ‘to stay ahead of the game’ by introducing new technology that drives mobility in listenership, while maintaining its focus on local contents.

“Astro Radio can also help their clients to reach the right audience at the right location with targeted commercial insertion based on regions like Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Miri and Kuching.

“We serve our clients with strong creative ideas and campaign execution that encompass our digital assets, on ground events and collaboration with other Astro properties,” he said.
